Defence Manufacturing Expansion Creates New Demand for High-Integrity Electrical Control Systems, Says Banelec

As Britain prepares to increase defence spending and expand sovereign manufacturing capability, much of the public debate has centred on ships, aircraft, missiles and armoured vehicles. Behind every new production line, however, sits another layer of engineering that receives far less attention: the electrical control systems that enable factories to manufacture safely, efficiently and at scale.

Across the UK, defence manufacturers are investing heavily in new production facilities, automated assembly lines, specialist test equipment and modern manufacturing technologies as they prepare for higher production volumes and longer-term procurement programmes. While these investments are often associated with robotics, machining centres and advanced manufacturing equipment, each relies on sophisticated electrical control systems to coordinate machinery, monitor processes and maintain the levels of reliability and traceability demanded by defence customers.

For Brierley Hill-based Banelec, one of the UK’s specialist designers and manufacturers of bespoke electrical control systems and automation solutions, the trend reflects a wider shift taking place across British industry.

Managing Director Dean Banner believes the growth in defence manufacturing is creating demand not simply for new machinery, but for integrated engineering solutions capable of supporting increasingly complex production environments.

“Whenever a manufacturer expands capacity, the conversation naturally starts with the machines,” he said. “But those machines have to communicate with one another, operate safely and deliver consistent performance every day. That’s where electrical control systems become absolutely fundamental.”

The UK Government’s commitment to strengthening domestic defence manufacturing has encouraged suppliers throughout the industrial supply chain to invest in new facilities, automation and production technologies capable of supporting long-term programmes.

As production becomes increasingly automated, manufacturers are placing greater emphasis on electrical integration, functional safety, data collection and process control to maximise productivity whilst maintaining the rigorous quality standards expected within defence.

For engineering companies, this represents an opportunity to deliver far more than individual control panels. Modern electrical control systems increasingly act as the central nervous system of manufacturing operations, integrating production equipment, safety systems, utilities, testing equipment and operator interfaces into a single coordinated platform.

Banner says customers are increasingly looking for complete engineering partnerships rather than standalone products.

“Today’s projects are much more integrated than they were even a few years ago,” he said. “We’re working with customers to understand how their production process operates as a whole, then designing control systems that improve efficiency, reliability and long-term maintainability.”

That approach is particularly valuable in defence manufacturing, where facilities often need to remain operational for decades whilst adapting to changing technologies, evolving customer requirements and new production programmes. Rather than replacing entire systems, manufacturers are increasingly seeking modular electrical architectures that allow additional equipment, automation and digital technologies to be integrated over time without disrupting existing operations.

The same principles are also supporting greater resilience across production facilities.

“The factories that will support the next generation of defence programmes won’t simply have newer equipment,” he said. “They’ll have smarter, better integrated electrical infrastructure that allows manufacturers to respond quickly, operate reliably and continue improving over the lifetime of the facility.”

As defence investment accelerates across the UK, the businesses enabling that transformation are likely to extend well beyond the companies building the finished platforms.
